Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced an investment of £5 million to help create a strategy that will boost tourism in the South West.
VisitEngland will hand out the fund on behalf of the government, which will then be distributed to the appropriate local organisations. This is to back the strengths that the South West already has, and hopefully create 1000 new jobs across the region.
After London the South West is the most popular destination for overseas visitors to visit, and with the new money injection, it is hoping the South West will continue to increase in popularity.
The region has many links to the arts and literature, with our very own Westward Ho! (where our holiday centre is located) having been named after the book by Charles Kingsley, as well as more recent television programmes such as Made in Chelsea being drawn to the region to film.
In the first nine months of last year, the South West saw over 1,584,000 international visitors, whereas over 13 million people flocked to London in the same time period. It is believed that the new cash injection will help to attract more visitors over time.
With such beautiful scenery located in our region, and being the favoured destinations of celebrities such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jennifer Saunders, we have no doubt that more people will be coming to experience the delights that Devon has to offer!
